If you are anything like us, you are excited by the prospect of traveling in a normal capacity again. It’s been a long and difficult 2020, but with the promising vaccine news and declining COVID-19 rates, we are feeling increasingly positive about 2021. That said, we are not out of the woods yet and getting back to travel is going to be a group effort. Despite rising vaccinations, there are still precautions we need to take to supplement this progress. Luckily, we work with some of the best travel partners in the world who are determined to help you travel safely. Select hotels in the Caribbean and Mexico are offering free/convenient on-Site COVID-19 testing.
As you probably know, in January, the CDC established a travel order on all international travel. The basics of the order require all air passengers, 2 years of age or older, traveling to the US from a foreign country to present proof of a negative COVID-19 test, or documentation of recovery, directly to the airline before boarding. If you plan on presenting a negative test result, you will need to get tested (NAAT or antigen test) no more than 3 days before your flight departs. (More information on the CDC order here)
Some of our initial questions after reading that order were:
- Where will our travelers be able to get tested?
- How much vacation time will travelers lose getting to/from a testing location?
- What happens if one of our travelers tests positive?
Our incredible hotel partners answered these questions, and more.
1. Where will our travelers be able to get tested?
Many of our hotel partners in Mexico and the Caribbean are offering COVID-19 testing ON-SITE! Either a member of their medical staff will come right to your room to run a test, or there will be a location on site to get tested. Either way – these properties have made getting tested on your vacation a minor inconvenience at most. We always talk about how our partners put their guests first, and this is a great example.
2. How much vacation time will travelers lose getting to/from a testing location?
Hardly any! With on-site testing, and lots of in-room testing, you will get tested and on with your day in a matter of minutes.
3. What happens if one of our travelers tests positive?
With hotels going out of their way to ensure guest safety on property, we hope this risk is low. However, it is important to be prepared and to know what to expect. How a positive test is handled will vary by hotel and destination. If you test positive, the one thing to know for sure is that you need to quarantine for a couple days, test again, and get that negative test result before boarding a plane home.
Some hotel brands like Marriott & Hyatt are making that quarantine easier by offering discounted extended stays of up to 50% off their standard/ flexible rates in Mexico and the Caribbean. Properties under the Hilton Luxury Brand including Waldorf Astoria Maldives and Conrad Punta Mita have designated rooms for isolation with a discounted rate on the room, food, and beverage. The best thing to do is work with your advisor before you travel to set a plan should a worst-case scenario arise.
Below you will see a list of select hotels in the Caribbean and Mexico offering free/convenient on-Site COVID-19 testing. If there is a cost in parentheses, that means the testing is not free. This is not a comprehensive list, and you should contact your travel advisor if you are interested in traveling to the Caribbean or Mexico.
Note that COVID-19 testing policies and costs are accurate as of this article’s publish date. Everything is subject to change and clients should talk to their travel advisors for the latest information and terms and conditions.
Virtuoso & Select Partners are listed in red. At these specific properties, Avenue Two Travel can secure additional benefits and amenities ranging from complimentary breakfasts to resort credits, upgrades and more. Plus- should something go wrong, we are only a phone call away.
